• This study aims to investigate a history of the machine for the Pachinko game, which is one of the most popular amusement games for Japanese. This first report presents the summarized information on the roots of the Pachinko machine, which was obtained from various ball game machines and their patent documents collected by the authors. At first, the board game named "Bagatelle" and the coin game machine named "Wall machine" are introduced. Both machines were made by English manufacturers at the end of the 19th century, and are close relation with the roots of the Pachinko machine. Next, situation of the beginning of manufacturing and selling of the Japanese ball game machines from 1920s to 1930s are described. Finally, the pioneers of the Pachinko machine in Japan are shown.
