Sliding experiments were conducted for investigating the effects of surface texturing on running-in process. In the tests, mechanical seals composed of a carbon ring and a SiC ring were slid in distilled water. On the stationary surface, micro pits were patterned by a Nd:YVO4 laser and three arrangements of micropits were tested. Running-in tests were conducted at a fixed condition for several hours before measuring the friction. The friction was measured three times under the same condition after the running-in tests. It was found that the arrangement of micropits influenced the running-in process. For all the arrangements, variation in friction coefficient among the measured data in the same condition decreased with increasing the period of the running-in process. One arrangement decreased the variation by 88 percent, while another changed by half. In addition, the region of the hydrodynamic lubrication was expanded after the running-in process for two arrangements of micropits but the region was not expanded for one arrangement.
