For the purpose of constructing an efficient water-turbine-system which can convert the tidal current energy into electric power at Kurushima Strait in Imabari, Japan, basic three types of water-turbine are experimentally examined. Tidal current in Kurushima Strait has multi directional stream, so that vertical axis turbines, e.g. Darrieus/Savonius turbines, are advantageous in their adoption for the energy extraction device. Novel component, peripheral guide vanes so as to control the flow direction, is proposed in the present study. Savonius turbine attached with the peripheral guide vanes can improve the conversion efficiency very well. It is found that the efficiency increases by about three times than that in simple Savonius turbine. Decrease in the power coefficient is also discussed in the case where a part of rotor is dried, that is, rotor is not fully sink.
