Suspensions containing submicron particles were atomized ultrasonically to separate particles whose size was within a limited range. Particles were contained in the fog and recovered in water as a trap. The fog brought smaller particles from sample suspensions consisting of SiO_2 or latex with nominal diameters of a few hundred nm. Interestingly, larger particles were recovered from the sample consisting of particles smaller than 100nm. The trend was observed for both SiO_2 and latex. Therefore, ultrasonic atomization with 2.4MHz brings particles whose size in the range of 120 to 320nm from aqueous suspensions. The separation performance was strongly influenced by the condition of water medium of the sample suspension, which is the dissolved air concentration. Degassing of sample suspensions made to lose the performance. This dramatically change suggests that the dissolved air closely related with the mechanism to bring particles within a limited size range into the fog. Ultrasonic frequency was also an important condition for the separation. The performance obtained by the irradiation of 2.4MHz was unobserved by the irradiation of 500kHz.
