We have evaluated the clinical characteristics of 25 patients with multiple organ failure (MOF) and the efficacy of plasmapheresis in those patients. The most common underlying diseases were liver disease and malignant neoplasm, and 12 patients developed MOF following surgical operation. Among the 25 patients, 21 died. With regard to combinations of failed organs, an organic correlation between renal failure, hepatic failure and DIC was speculated. Further thera-peutic approaches for MOF are necessary.
