Many techniques have been proposed for pathogen removal and inactivation in blood components. A pasteurization process, a solvent-detergent method, and a photochemical treatment using methylene blue and light have been introduced for plasma. For red cells and platelets, use of leukoreduction filters is equivalent to testing for the prevention of CMV transmission. Several chemical and photochemical processes for cellular components continue to be studied.
