Cryofiltration (CRYO), as an alternative treatment, was performed on two steroid-resistant patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and one patient with colonictype Crohn's disease (CD). Case 1 was a 63 year-old male with UC. His symptoms improved with steroid hormone (SH) and salicylazo-sulphapyridine (SASP) treatment, however, relapse occurred six months later. Symptoms again disappeared after a total of six CRYO treatments during one month. Case 2 was a 32 year-old female with UC. Her symptoms relapsed one year and six months after the treatment with SH and SASP.Similarly, they improved after a total of seven CRYO treatments. Case 3 was a 23 year-old female with CD. Severe colitis, including perineal fistula, improved with total parenteral nutrition and 10 CRYO treatments for two months. Plasma IL-10 in all patients increased after CRYO, while other cytokines including IL-6 remained unchanged. It is likely that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was also controlled by immunomodulation using CRYO.
