Ultrasonic degradation of cellulose in N-Methyl-Morpholine N-Oxide/water mixture (NMMO) was investigated at the 20 and 500 kHz frequencies. Solution viscosity and the degree of polymerization of cellulose decreased with sonication time at both frequencies. In order to elucidate the solvent effects, sonolysis of cellulose was examined in 7.6 wt% sodium hydroxide/18 wt% Urea aqueous solution (NaOH/Urea) and 1-Butyl-3-Methylimidazolium Chloride (BmimCl) (5 wt% water). These results show that degradation in NMMO solution at 20 kHz sonication was more effective.
