One hundred and twenty field-mice (Apodemus argenteus) were captured at the experimental forest of Hokkaido Res. Ctr., For. and Forest Prod. Res. Inst. from October to early December, in 1990. They were examined in their respective unit-cages, in which 10 zinc phosphide baits (Zn_3P_2, 1% con.) were given to each of 63 mice for three days, at the same temperature as the open air. The other 57 mice were used as a control. Of all the 63 mice, 73.0 percent ate the zinc phosphide baits. The mortality rate was 47.6 percent of them. The average number of baits taken per dead mouse was 1.7 baits. No difference in the mortality rate was recognized between the sexes of this species of mouse. Fifty-seven gray red-backed voles (Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae) were also captured at the same place and time of the above-mentioned field-mice. Thirty-four voles among them were used as an experiment and the other 23 voles as a control. The experiment was done under the same condition as that in the field-mice. Of all the 34 voles, 94.1 percent ate the zinc phosphide baits and were dead. The average number of baits taken per dead vole was 1.2 baits, this being less than in the case of field-mice (A. argenteus). As the result of this experiment, it was confirmed that the present rodenticide was very effective for this vole species. Finally, it was considered that there would be quite a high possibility that the small Japanese field-mice (A. argenteus) should ingest the present vole-poison baits (zinc phosphide, Zn_3P_2, 1% con.) dropped by helicopter on the planted forests abounding with mice.
