The objective of this paper is to investigate the response of a multi-story building, during earthquake motions when the lift-off is allowed, by comparing with the case when the lift-off is prevented, varying the parameters related to characteristics of the soil, structural shape and strength. The building structure is modeled as a MDoF system, represented by a finite rotation model, which takes into account P-Δ effects. This model rests on an elastic foundation represented by two spring-dashpot elements located at both edges of the foundation mat. It is observed that permitting the structure to lift-off from its foundation soil can reduce the rotational angles of the stories and the ductility demand during earthquake motions.
