In conventional analysis, floor masses are assumed to lump at beam-column connections. Such a lumped mass model neglects the contribution of vertical vibration of floor slabs under the earthquake motion. A computer program was developed for the nonlinear earthquake response analysis of plane frames with distributed masses along girders. The nonlinear earthquake response of plane frames subjected to horizontal and vertical components of near field earthquakes was compared for a lumped-mass model and models incorporating distributed vertical masses along girders. Suitability of the lumped mass model is discussed in estimating frame earthquake responses.
