Tectonic earthquakes, which cause the largest natural disaster in the human society, are generated by faulting. If we know the seismological properties of the fault, we can estimate the seismic hazard potential attributed to the fault. Since we cannot predict the location, date, and size of the possible earthquake in the fault, the seismic hazard can be estimated only in a probabilistic manner. This paper derives the probability distribution function of the maximum earthquake intensity during the structure's lifetime based on the statistical models of seismic source and attenuation. A method of structural reliability analysis by using this probability distribution function of the seismic hazard is also discussed.
