Hydrodynamic gas film bearings are widely used in the high-speed rotating machinery such as turbines, compressors and pump. In order to design the hydrodynamic thrust bearing successfully, it is necessary to ensure the prediction accuracy of the operating characteristics. This paper describes the prediction accuracy of the load capacity of the gas film thrust bearing through numerical simulations by DF method as well as experiment when subjected to the high-speed operation conditions 40,000 rpm to 60,000 rpm by using the specially designed test rig. Especially, a main characteristic of the test rig is that the gas film thickness is measured by the laser displacement sensor. The experimental results of the load capacity are good agreement with the numerical simulation results, but indicate that it is difficult to measure the gas film thickness accurately because of the surface roughness variation of the thrust bearing. Finally, it is anticipated that the proposed double spiral grooved thrust gas bearing may serve as the influence of surface roughness is less than the single spiral one.
