In 2007 Denmark introduced the policy of validation of prior learning for adult education. This validation targets not only vocational, general adult education but also non-formal and informal adult education. The Validation of prior learning is based on the idea of that people have already the knowledge, skills and competencies regardless of how they were obtained and people may learn through work, leisure activities and liberal adult education. If they have a skill or competency, they need to receive credit and validation. The EU had introduced and developed this policy and it is also introduced in Denmark. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the characteristic of validation of prior learning in Denmark and the reason why the government and liberal adult educational organizations promote this validation. Especially liberal adult education traditionally has the educational idea that it is far from validation. The purpose of government is to increase the number of people who are highly educated in a knowledge based society and make human and economic resources more efficient in the labor market. Besides government intends the integration of immigrants and disadvantaged people. The organizations of liberal adult education intend using this validation for supporting and encouraging the disadvantaged people.
