Since Foreign Language Activities were begun in Japanese elementary schools in April 2011 after a two-year period of transition. The objective of the Foreign Language Activities is to provide the foundation for pupils' communicative abilities, especially oral communication skills. Since the Foreign Language Activities were introduced, it has often been said that students have acquired a certain degree of English ability by the time they enter junior high school. This is quite significant; however, many students feel that they are still weak in English, and a considerable number of students want to do reading and writing tasks, which are avoided at elementary schools. The purpose of this paper is to investigate students' attitudes toward learning English, especially their motivation for writing tasks and to discuss the best way of treating writing tasks at junior high schools. The results showed that the students like to do writing tasks, regardless of whether they are not good at English or not. The results also show that the number of words which they use in their compositions has gradually increased in all levels of students. In particular, students who are not necessarily good at English do their best and work on composition, so that they use more words than higher level students.
