In this paper, two research themes involving coke-making technology were discussed. 1) Evaluation of Coal Caking Property The evaluation method of caking property is crucial for coke-making technology. Generally, the Gieseler plastometry and dilatation tests are used to measure the caking properties of coal. But, these tests have disadvantages when they are applied to non- or slightly-caking coals. Most of non- or slightly-caking coals cannot be distinguished by the Giseler plastometry test, nevertheless their coke strength indices are not identical. For blended coals consisting of coking coals and non- or slightly-caking coals, there are no good relationship between caking property values of coal blends measured by the Gieseler plastometry and strength indices of cokes made from these coal blends. New method for evaluating caking properties by NMR has been discussed. As a result, it was found that caking properties of non- or slightly-caking coals could be measured by NMR method. 2) De-chlorine Technology of Waste Plastics Recycling Process Using Coke Ovens Waste plastics involve chlorine-contained plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), etc. It is generally known that such chlorine-contained plastics cause corrosion problem at the incinerator or gasification equipment. Therefore, the behavior of chlorine content of waste plastics was investigated. As a result, it was found that the chlorine content of waste plastics is mostly pyrolysed during carbonization with coal in a coke oven and effectively captured by ammonia liquor.
