Over a fourteen year period, production management was researched at a large automotive supply factory and a number of planning and scheduling tools created to assist the factory. These tools included an integrated set of functionality from the president's office to the floor including finance, human resources, and industrial engineering, flow shop planning, job shop scheduling and dispatching, integration with the corporate ERP, and a supply chain stabilizer module for upstream pulls. From this experience, lessons were learned about what was needed for a factory in the middle of a supply chain, what was considered useful by plant personnel, what was actually used, how requirements changed as the factory evolved, and how the system usage varied as plant management changed. In this paper, we share the significant lessons learned, the scheduling and planning challenges identified, and present ideas for how research can possibly address the challenges.
