The feasibility of supercapacitors (SCs), including electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), as alternative energy sources to secondary batteries is discussed on the basis of a comparison with lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Charge-discharge cycle testing emulating typical load profiles of low-Earth orbit (LEO) spacecrafts was performed to investigate life performance of SCs, and outstanding life performance of SCs even at deep depth of discharge (DoD) was experimentally verified. A constant power (CP) charging scheme is introduced to save the mass of photovoltaic (PV) arrays for SC-based power systems. The mass of LIB-, EDLC-, and LIC-based power systems were compared for a 1kW LEO spacecraft. The comparative analysis indicated that LICs can be alternative energy storage sources to LIBs that are operated at shallow DoD to achieve long cycle life, even from the power system mass view point.
