The author has been engaging in the study on development of coal solubilization reactions under mild conditions in order to characterize chemical structures of constituents. Such basic studies are essentially important for the noble use of heavy fossil fuels to design the most effective integrated processes as well as high performance catalysts. We have developed several new reductive alkylation methods of coals to solubilize under mild reactions; e.g., by the use of strong bases or improved electron transfer under ultrasound irradiation. The detailed characterization of chemical structures of soluble products led to estimation of the reaction sites of components to effectively relax the aggregated structure. The unique reaction has also been developed to oxidize aromatic components in coal by the use of RuO4 to convert soluble products in aqueous solution. The detailed analyses of soluble compounds with carboxylic acids have provided specific information about structures of aromatic ring condensation and aliphatic portion attached to aromatic rings. We have firstly succeeded to estimate chemical structures of many individual components in heavy oil conveniently without any chromatographic pretreatment by using FT-ICR mass spectrometry with ultrahigh resolution. The proposed novel analytical method will be expected to develop for various applications.
