• Experiences of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake have triggered keen public awareness of geotechnical risk, in particular from the view of safety of residential land. Proper use of land is a primary importance of mitigating geotechnical risk as Fundamentals of Land Use states. This paper describes the role of geotechnical engineering in the framework of social systems and emphasizes the needs for closer collaboration with regal and economical professionals for mitigating geotechnical risk. The paper touches on the recent establishment of the Japanese Association for Geotechnical Evaluation and the expectation of the newly established geotechnical qualification by the Association.
