Prosody - rhythm, pitch, intonation, pause, and so on - is believed to play an important role in listening. Researchers argue that prosody plays an important part in reading as well, because prosody seems to be working in one's mind as an inner-speech or sub-vocalization. Some of the theories deal with the role of prosody in silent reading: Implicit Prosody Hypothesis (Fodor, 2002), Structural Precedence Hypothesis (Koriat et al., 2002). Section 1 of this paper introduces some of the problems concerning grammar instruction in the Japanese EFL classroom. In Section 2, the relationship between prosody and syntax is overviewed. Section 3 deals with some of the theories concerning the role of prosody in reading. The idea of prosodic hierarchy and its transcription (ToBI) is introduced along with the process of measurement of speech sound in Section 4. Some of the problems unique to EFL learners are mentioned in Section 5. The experiments are dealt with in Section 6. By looking at the bottom-up sequence of sentence processing, the role of prosodic phrasing in silent and oral reading will be investigated especially concerning the influence of prosodic phrasing upon syntactic judgment. The contribution of prosodic phrasing to syntactic acquisition will also be considered.
