The South Korean society is currently experiencing a significant change in families and the introduction of new welfare policies and welfare systems. This research clarifies the preferences of South Korean elderly females regarding their financial independence, their ideal co-residence with married children and attitudes toward care and utilization of welfare services. A case study was conducted on 25 females aged 65 or over who use the services of the elder welfare center in the suburban area of Busan. There is a decline in the family's function of caring for the elderly, which has been supported by married children co-residing with their parents. This is caused by the change in household composition, more cases of divorce, trends toward discoverture or late marriage and preferences to higher education. Many subjects preferred to "live in a house in the adjacent area" or "live separately." Some subjects try to minimize the burden of care incurred by their children, even though they have weak financial basis. This makes their old age lives more difficult. The elderly hardly expect their families to take care of them because of the trends toward more independence, higher expectations regarding social welfare and social support.
