This paper shows the biomass situation in the Philippines. It presents the current share of biomass for energy and biomass-based biofuels in the primary energy mix and power generation. It likewise covers the quantity of biomass generated from the country's top four agricultural crops in terms of annual production, the biomass potential and the existing biomass energy technologies in the Philippines. In 2012, biomass for energy and biofuels continue to provide significant combined share in the primary energy mix of 5.36 MTOE equivalent to 13.5% of the total in 2010. The contribution of combined biomass and biofuels increased from 5.36 MTOE in 2010 to 5.40 MTOE in 2011. Biomass contributes 27.10 GWh and 61.45 GWh of electricity in 2010 and 2011 respectively. The percent share of biomass for power in the power generation mix is still small but it is expected to provide 277 MW of power in 2015. Biofuels is already being used nationwide in the transportation sector as mandated by law. With the mandatory use of ethanol-blended gasoline and biodiesel nationwide as required by RA 9367, biodiesel is already being used nationwide at 2% of the total volume of diesel sold since February 6, 2009 while E10 is being used for all gasoline vehicle since February 6, 2011. Biofuels for transportation, it is expected to increase the ethanol blend in gasoline from 10% at present to 20% by 2020 while biodiesel will increase from 2% at present to 5% by 2015, 10% in 2020 and 20% in 2030. There are several biomass energy technologies now available in the country namely: direct combustion systems, gasification, biogas systems and alcohol production from biomass. Information on the importance of biomass in the primary energy mix and power generation of the country and its potential for energy, power and fuel in transportation provides us the drive to further intensify the development of biomass energy technologies, generate programs, address critical issues in order to increase the utilization of biomass in the country and increase the level of energy security.
