This study aims to revise the motivational strategy and examined its effect on motivation. Specifically, the enhancement effect was compared between the revised version and the previous version. Thus, the purposes of this study are as follows: (1) to compare the effect of motivational strategy on trait motivation; (2) to compare the effect of motivational strategy on English classroom motivation, and (3) to explore the qualitative aspects of the need for competence. One hundred ten university students who were enrolled in a first-year English language course participated in this study. They were divided into two groups; 52 students were in a control group, and 58 in an experiment group. The intervention was given to them for fifteen weeks. The questionnaires were administered at three times (at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the intervention). The data were collected in both qualitative and quantitative way. The results supported stronger enhancement effect of the remodeled strategy. The results also revealed dynamic process of satisfying the need for competence during listening and speaking activities.
