In this paper, we conducted a task-oriented experiment with paired subjects to examine expressions of reference points in direction-giving. These subjects comprised ten pairs of native Japanese speakers, ten pairs of a non-native Japanese explainer and a native Japanese recipient, and ten pairs of a native Japanese explainer and a non-native Japanese recipient. We observed that many recipients made mistakes regarding the route in the very early phase of the discourse of direction-giving. We examined expressions of reference points to investigate this phenomenon. To this end, we used discourse analysis to reveal the following: (1) the positions and expressions of reference points that were identified by explainers and recipients and (2) the differences that existed among the paired subject groups regarding the ways of expression or the confirmation for reference points.
