The factors of job stress and its physical and mental effects in national public employees at quarantine stations were studied with the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire, developed by the stress research team sponsored by Ministry of Labour in order to check worker stress levels. The data were examined by covariance structure analysis (multiple indicator multiple cause model). About 70% (n=608) of quarantine staff answered and it was showed that their demographic information and job environments or job conditions varied greatly. "Interpersonal relations" was the factor most associated with stress condition, regardless of job environments or conditions, although "quantitative overload," "mental demands," "job control," and "job fitness" were all shown to be important factors causing stress. In addition, people supported by their superiors, colleagues, spouse, family, and friends were likely to feel less stressed. In conclusion, developing good human relationships at work was considered to be very important to prevent quarantine staff from developing stress that possibly causes physical or mental effects.
