In recent years, the needs for the development of technologies which not only lead to reductions in ship carbon dioxide emissions but also in ship operating costs have been steadily growing throughout the world. In light of this, the authors of this paper are looking at ways to achieve these goals by examining the development of air lubrication technologies designed to reduce the frictional resistance of ships. In this paper, the authors used mock-up tests, dockside tests as well as numerical calculations to investigate and confirm the existence of an air blow condition of valve opening rates when an air lubrication method was applied to a large shallow-water ship. Subsequently, the authors were also able to verify the energy saving effects of said technology though sea trials. When the ship was in an even-keel condition, the authors were able to verify through mock-up tests and dockside tests on the ship that air was being blown uniformly from each small hole. In addition, also through the aforementioned dockside tests, the authors were also able to verify that air was almost uniformly distributed to each branch pipe in the heeled condition through the appropriate opening of relevant valves. The analytical results of the flow rate distribution using MelTHERFY coincided very well with the estimated flow rate in the heeled condition, thus confirming the effectiveness of this method as an analytical technique. Furthermore, when the authors used the same air lubrication system in speed trials, a maximum energy savings effect of 12 % along with a corresponding reduction in fuel consumption were also verified.
