This study was conducted with Japanese participants of cultural exchangeprograms in Asia in order to explore the effects on intercultural communicationcompetence of the participants. The effects of this program wereassessed using the Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI; Kelley& Meyers, 1995), open-ended pre- and post- questionnaires, and a groupinterview. The increase in the participants' CCAI scores suggested thatthe intercultural communicative competence of the Japanese participantsimproved. Qualitative analysis of the pre-and post- questionnaires and thegroup interview explain reasons in detail for any change. Findings from this study imply the necessity of intentional pedagogy such as meaningful interactions and ample opportunities for self-reflection.
