An English recital is one area of language learning where there is a strong focus on the pronunciation element. It is a chance for the student to develop and demonstrate their command of various components of pronunciation; both at a segmental and suprasegmental level. However, although pronunciation itself is an essential facet of language learning very little research has been published on the teaching of this subject. This case study looks at a Japanese university student preparing for an English recital and focuses on the coaching of the pronunciation factors. Firstly an analysis of the students' language reveals a number of substitutions from her first language and other non-target characteristics. This is followed by a discussion of the various phonetic components and a description of the different intervention methods that were employed. This case study looks at the differing impact of segmental and suprasegmental elements on intelligibility and fluency. It finds that errors and substitutions were strongly influenced by the context in which they occurred. Finally, it goes on to show how this knowledge can be used to help ameliorate the issues.
