Presence of allantoin in the must saccus was first demonstrated in the present study. Of 35 MeOH extracts from each of 35 commercial musk sacci, containing 0.0-4.4% by weight of muscone based on the weight of dry samples, 22 were found to be positive in differential glyoxylate analysis reaction. Thus suggested presence of allantoin was confirmed by U.V. spectra, TLC and by the formation of allantoic acid by the reaction with mung bean allantoinase.
