The costs for sewage sludge disposal have become an increasingly heavy burden on the local governments' finances. They require the development of a low-cost, low greenhouse gas emission sludge processing technology. This technology uses a "High-performance continuous hydrothermal reactor" for the continuous hydrolysis of "labile organic matter" like waste and excess sludge into carboxylic acid. During a retention period of 5 days it converts into digester gas. Following this is the application of a technology developed to leave only cellulosic "refractory (hard to decompose) organic matter" as found in paper etc. This can be used as solid fuel. The primary features of this technology are its ability to produce solid fuel only using the sludgeconverted digester gas at very low running cost, and that it produces more greenhouse gas then it emits. Additionally, the solid fuel produced in this plant can be used as fertilizer. Research shows that compared to conventional sewage sludge compost fertilizer available on the market, this fertilizer provides a 20-30% higher growth rate.
