Abstract This is an observational study on development of students' presentation skills in kiso-zemi, or First Year Experience class. There are many university students who find presentation or public speaking difficult even in their mother tongue, yet they face opportunities to make speeches such as in extracurricular activities and job hunting. None of the kiso-zemi teachers are specialists in the subject, but teachers' expert knowledge may be of use. In this study, the practice used for EFL was conducted and step-by-step exercises were introduced in AY2012 for "Show & Tell", "Poster Presentation", and "PechaKucha20×20(this case 20×10 was used)", a slide presentation. These practical approaches and outcomes of students' evaluation of these activities are presented and discussed. Students' self reflection to assess their improvement is nearly all positive, something that may be attributed to peer learning; i.e.group(pair)discussions, group rehearsals and student's feedback sheets.
