The Kobe Earthquake (Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake), registering 7.3 on the Richter scale, hit Kobe City and nearby cities in the eastern part of Japan in 1995. The quake claimed 6,048 lives and injured more than 34,900 people. Here, the seismology of the quake is described, and the various types of geo-hazards (geomorphic hazards) caused by the strong motion of the quake, including liquefaction, mountain slope failures, post-quake failures, and residential land disasters are described in detail.
