This paper reports a pilot study using video materials to provide near peer role models (NPRM) for language learning. The materials were used in an English class for first year students whose major was international cultural studies at a junior college. The five short video clips showed interviews with four Japanese EFL (English as a Foreign Language) speakers and one Canadian JSL (Japanese as a Second Language) speaker, all chosen for their enthusiasm for learning. The interviewees talked about their language learning history, strategies and beliefs. The videos were used as supplementary class materials over several weeks. With each video, worksheets that had questions about some key points for listening comprehension and group discussion were given in class. At the end of the semester, a questionnaire was given to the students to ask which speaker was most inspirational for their language learning and why they thought so. The overall responses from the students indicate using interview videos of enthusiastic foreign language speakers is effective in provoking interest and motivation in language learning. Reflecting on the comments given by the students, implications for a future study are given at the end.
