The ethnic Koreans in China have been held in spotlight due to their unique role in economic and cultural exchange in the region of Northeast Asia. The majority of ethnic Koreans in China is concentrated in the Yanbian district on the shore of the Tumen River, where the big development project is in progress. One of the advantages enjoyed by the ethnic Koreans in China is the fact that they have a web of personal connections with Korean communities in Japan, Russia, the Unite States, and needless to say in North and South Korea. The multiple networks provide opportunities for economic as well as cultural progress to this region. The ethnic Koreans in China have been noted for their diligence and their high level of education. For this reason, the ethnic Koreans in China were considered a desirable model for other ethnic groups in China usually sufferd from extreme poverty. However, the ethnic Koreans in China are under serious stress stemming from the advance of market economy in China. The primary and secondary industry that have traditionally sustained Korean communities in China are now outmoded and inefficient. And the third industry is too limited to absorb the redundancy of the first and secondary industries. And many of the ethnic Koreans in China tend to move from rural districts to urban districts. The rapid changes in their life stiles make assimilation of ethnic Koreans into the mainstream Han nationality accelerate.
