International financial institutions need to ensure that projects planed given area are accepted by local communities. Two things that institutions look at are appropriate information disclosure and meaningful participation of local communities. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has developed procedures to ensure "broad community support" of its operations during the appraisal stage; however, these procedures still need to be tested for their applicability and modified based on the IFC' s experiences. In obtaining continued support from local communities, IFC requires the clients to carry out effective consultations on an ongoing basis, to strengthen monitoring, and to report results of monitoring to local communities. To develop good relationship with local communities, it is necessary to assess both positive and negative impacts of projects in the long term, and to develop and implement more comprehensive measures to address identified issues.
