What is difficult to understand for Japanese learners about news? The difficulty is not only because of the vocabulary but also the length of the sentences. This study focuses on relative clauses, which is considered the main factor in making sentences longer, and examines whether their use correlates with various news genres. It was found that the sentences are the longest and the frequency of relative clause use is the highest in the genre " incident or accident" . In this study the kinds of words which are used antecedents (modified words) are also examined, because giving information about modified words is helpful understand the news.
