The native speakers of Japanese sometimes happen to switch the speech level even toward the person met for the first time. How do they feel and evaluate the shifted speech level in the conversation? The purpose of this study is to investigate what kinds of the speech level shift will have an effect on the evaluation of Japanese native speakers. The results show that it is not the 'word-shift', but the 'sentence-shift' which greatly influences the evaluation. In particular, the difference between the polite style and the plain style in the sentence is significant.
