Responding to the challenge of multi-media, at Macquarie University's Japanese Studies, we are currently producing a CD ROM to teach basic grammar to beginners using computer graphics-following our success with Kantaro. Also, we have recently conducted video-conference classes with Kanda University of International Studies. New media naturally demands modifications to the conventional teaching methods as the teacher-student relationship changes significantly. Moreover, the teacher needs to assume an added responsibility to liaise with technicians who form an integral part of the teaching projects. It is vital to develop effective communication with technicians who may not only lack a background in teaching the Japanese language, but may also be unfamiliar with Japanese language and culture.
