A competition study was carried out in greenhouse to compare the nodule-forming ability of a mixture of strains of B. japonicum. A mixed inoculant of B. japonicum in five different ratios (1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 1:5, and 5:1) was inoculated to Glycine max (L.) Merr. cv. Okuharawase. The results showed that strains USDA 110 and A 1017 were more competitive than strain TKG 4B. It was observed that strains USDA 110 and A 1017 formed higher proportions of nodules sampled in all five inoculum ratios than the TKG 4B strain. The percentage recoveries of the inoculum strains in the nodules were not correlated with the mixture ratios and the nitrogen-fixing ability. However, the results showed that a mixture of strains is more effective than a single strain for the fixation of nitrogen.
