Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in some humus-rich Ando soils of Japan

Information about the distribution of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi in arable soils of Japan is limited. To characterize the VAM fungi in some humus rich Ando soils (Melanudands) in Japan, spores of VAM fungi were collected from experimental fields where different crops were cultivated. Sixteen spore types were detected in the soils, and their morphology was described. Nine of them were identified as Acaulospora scrobiculata, Gigaspora margarita, Scutellispora gregaria, Scutellispora pellucida, Scutellispora erythropa, Scutellispora gilmorei, Scutellispora alborosea, Glomus constrictum and Glomus caledonium. Two other spore types which resembled Scutellispora tricalypta and Glomus claroides, were isolated. the species composition of the VAM fungi differed among the fields, depending upon the crops, suggesting the presence of a host preference (ecological host specificity) for these fungi.
