The classroom language of English teachers, especially that of Japanese English teachers, has been one of the most frequently debated issues in English classrooms. Some teachers and researchers have claimed that only English should be spoken in English classes while others have argued that Japanese should be used as the main classroom language. In particular, since the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) announced in 2009 that high school English teachers should conduct their lessons in English, an increasing concern over this issue has been expressed by many English teachers. However, little is known about how Japanese students perceive English being used as the language of instruction. Because students' attitudes toward the classroom language play an important role in English classes, it is necessary to investigate how they perceive the language in which their English classes are conducted. Therefore, this study aims at exploring Japanese college students' perceptions of the classroom language of English classes.
