The reason for teaching global issues is abundantly clear to many language teachers; a teacher's goal should not be limited to linguistics without substance but rather in promoting language skills that are both purposeful and communicative. On the other hand, detractors of Global Issues and other types of content focused language classes insist that focusing on content, no matter how well intentioned detracts from the teaching of language. In response, many proponents assert that language and content are not mutually exclusive and far from detracting from language learning, the teaching of content in fact complements and supports the teaching of language. Examining some of the underlying principles for this field of teaching provides a window upon the rationale for teaching Global Issues and the variables conducive to a successful learning experience.
