Understanding hydrological responses to climate change on various timescales is essential for predicting future hydrological change. To test the variability of past hydrological events on centennial timescales, we investigated dry bulk density (DBD) and grain size features of a sedimentary core (YG04) collected from the floodplain of the Keum River, central South Korea, as well as the grain size of the present overbank and slack-water deposits. The grain size distributions in core YG04 are similar to those of the present slack-water sediments, suggesting that the past floodplain deposits were dominantly formed by suspension processes during flooding. The variations in DBD and median grain size over the past 2400 years from the core samples indicate two clusters showing lower DBD and larger grain size (between 760- 1030 and 1980- 2170 cal yr BP), suggesting large flooding events. This may indicate that large flooding events in the past occurred more frequently during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) than during the Little Ice Age (LIA).
