In Beowulf we can find several important digressions, in which is included so called the Finn Episode. Finn was the king of Frisia, which was one of the Germanic kingdoms in the Middle Ages. In that Episode, Hnaef, who was Finn's brother-in-law and belonged to the Danish dynasty, visited Finn's castle and during his stay there broke out a war between the Frisians and the Danes. The Jutes, who later migrated to Britain with the Angles and Saxons, were on the Frisians' side and in the beginning of the Episode had been suggested the Jutes' treachery toward the Danes. The leader of the Danish army was called Hengest. Although Hengest and his men fought bravely, Hnaef and his son were slayed and the war resulted in their defeat. After the war Hengest waited for the chance and finally revenged his king. In the Finn's Episode Hengest was the leader of the Danes and fought with the Frisians and the Jutes. On the other hand, we find the name Hengist in Venerable Bede's Ecclesiastical History of of the English People. According to Bede Hengist was one of the earliest settlers in England and was the leader of the Jutes. Hengist was changed to Hengest in the Old English translation of Bede by Alfred the Great. The name Hengest is thought to be very rare in Old English. Is it then an incidental occurrence that the two names coexisted in both Beowulf and Bede? Or do they signify one and the same person? In the latter case, we are to face the next question: why does Hengest who in Beowulf belonged to the Danes and fought with the Jutes emerges as the leader of the Jutes in Bede? This paper aims to solve the question. It also tries to seek for thereason why Beowulf, which is the story of the Danish world, was written in Anglo-Saxon England.
