For the development of methane hydrate, an environmental risk is one of the issues which need to be considered. Public interest against the environmental risks due to the methane hydrate development is one of the highest interests which we need to show the possibility of safe and secure development for the future commercialization. To show this safeness and secureness of the methane hydrate development, Research Consortium for Methane Hydrate Resources in Japan (MH21) is conducting the studies for environmental problems. In the Phase 2 of this project, Environmental Risk Assessment, Development of the environmental monitoring system, simulations for the methane leakage and change of the water condition due to the release of the produced water, surveys for the marine environment and formulations of the Environmental impact assessment report are conducted. Here some of the details of environmental studies in MH21 are presented.
