中学校検定教科書と公立高校入試の英文及び使用語彙に関する難易度比較研究

I compared the texts of junior high school textbooks and public senior high school entrance examinations from 1986 till 2009 throughout Japan, focusing on the difficulty of sentences and vocabulary. The Ministry of Education revises the Courses of Study for Secondary Schools almost every 10 years. In the process of revisions, the language materials have been reduced since 1972. People were worried that this might cause a decline in academic standards. However, the difficulty of entrance examinations for public senior high schools seems not to be changed and to remain at the same level of the 1980s. Entrance examinations are made on the base of the textbooks, but little is known about how they are related. The present study attempted to examine the trends in their readabilities for about 20 years. The results analyzed by Flesch Reading Ease and Gunning Fog Index showed the sentences of textbooks have become easier to read. But those of entrance examinations maintained the level of the 1980s. The gap between the difficulty of textbooks and entrance examinations was widening. Paying attention to vocabulary, we should strive to bridge the gap of the difficulty between textbooks and entrance examinations.
