This paper will introduce an ongoing project to develop the provision of English as a Foreign Language at Sojo University.It will privide an overview of some of the issues and challenges surrounding language education in Japan at the current time before going on to present a case for the implementation of methodologies which are student-centered and in which English is seen as a tool mediating real world interactions rather than simply as an object of study.The Sojo International Learning Center provides an example of how this may be achieved within the context of a private university in Japan orientated towards science and technology.
