Corpus linguistics has been widely used as a methodology in various language-related studies. Recently, there is a growing interest in investigating learner language on computer to identify "criterial features," language features that serve as criteria to distinguish one proficiency level from another. The English Profile Programme (EPP) by the Cambridge team is one of such attempts. They examine their learner corpora classified by CEER levels to find key features for each CEFR level. This paper reports on the basic concepts of criterial features and how they are extracted from corpora. A special emphasis is on the possibility of linking the present author's previous studies using Japanese EFL learner corpora to the EPP findings, and even correcting some of their findings by closely examining the nature of Japanese EEL learners and their contexts.
