It may be said that one of the greatest difficulties for Chinese and Japanese in learning eachothers language, especially in spoken Chinese and Japanese, exists in the differencesbetween Chinese and Japanese vowels and consonants. While Japanese has a five-vowelsystem (/a/i/u/e/o/), Chinese has a much larger number of vowel sounds, an eight-vowelsystem (/a/i/o/u/y/ / / /). In the consonant system, the place and manner of articulation arevery different. By applying the methods of acoustical experiment and statistical analysisand by taking the idea of vowel and consonant patterns into consideration, the paper aims toexplore Chinese and Japanese student’s language transfers of mother tongue in Chinese andJapanese vowels and consonants pronunciation in learning each others language.
